The Silverbirds

Mitch Ryder Revisited

"Mitch Ryder Revisited" is a song about what I call the Detroit Diaspora, as well as a tribute to one of the greatest Detroit rockers ever. Oh yeah, and it's also about getting a little older and looking back on the Detroit rock days with the somewhat blue, bittersweet perspective that age sometimes gives us. The song tries to capture the feel of simple acoustic music playing in a club just at closing time.

Thursday Ride

"Thursday Ride" harkens back to Leinweber's years growing up in Union Lake, Michgan during the seventies. It tries to capture some of the spirit of the times, and, of course, the music. Musical references in the song include Bob Seger's "Mainstreet," and Bob Dylan classics from Blood on the Tracks, including "Lilly, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" and "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go." As with all Leinweber originals, you'll want to pay special attention to the lyrics and the vintage FM electric guitar solo that ends the track.

Dooley

David Leinweber

Straight from the Mayberry Jail to your PC or iPod, here is a great version of the Dillard's classic moonshiner song, Dooley, as performed by the Georgia Flatpickers. It's from the Simple Songs and a Box Guitar sessions.

Download "Dooley" here.

Here, There, & Everywhere

David Leinweber

A hidden gem from the Simple Songs and a Box Guitar CD -- a highly original acoustic guitar arrangement of the Beatles classic "Here, There and Everywhere," one of Paul McCartney's very best songs (and that's really saying something). It's performed by David Leinweber and Bob McMillan on Martin flattops.

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

Original Hymn Arrangements for Piano

One of the most beautiful of hymns, one that's a touch sad, actually. This arrangement captures the soothing and melancholy flavor of the tune.Download Here

Mitch Ryder Revisited

Words and Music by David Leinweber

She was over in the corner, and I don't mean to sound cliche
But she was sitting on a barstool trying to drink her blues away
I was over in the corner, singing every song I knew
From a world I used to live in, Detroit, 1982
It was so fine, it was so fine
Yeah the city I grew up in was so fine

She said "Won't you please just play me one more song before you go
It's a tune that I remember from old Detroit radio
And though I can't recall the singer and I can't recall the song
I remember how it made me feel when we'd all sing along
It was so fine, it was so fine
Yeah the music we were singing was so fine"

So I reached out for my six-string, my good old box-guitar
And I thumbed a little melody and it drifted through the bar
And though I didn't know the music or how the song should go
I played something I remembered from old Detroit radio
It was so fine, it was so fine
Yeah the tune that I remembered was so fine

Fee fee fie fie fo fo fum
Look at Molly now, here she comes
Wearing her pearls and an alligator hat
She's a real humdinger and I like her like that
She's so fine, so very fine
O Good Golly, My Miss Molly you're so fine

She said "That's the song I'm thinking of, that's the song I know
That's the tune that I remember from old Detroit radio
And though I can't recall the singer and I can't recall the band
I still recall those feelings, sometimes more than I can stand
They were so fine, they were so fine
Yeah the feelings I remember were so fine"

Well now the place was closing, they were mopping up the floor
They were wiping down the tables, but she said "Play that song once more
For there's something in the music that soothes me to my soul
Must be the spirit of the radio and old Detroit rock and roll
It was so fine, so very fine
Yeah the spirit in that music was so fine"

Fee fee fie fie fo fo fum
Look at Molly now, cause here she comes
Wearing pearls and a diamond ring
She's got ribbons on her fingers and everything
She was so fine, so very fine
Yes the devil in her blue dress was so fine

Then suddenly I saw it, as she got up to go
The little blue dress she was wearing, in the neon window's glow
She said "Thank you for your music," then she added with a smile
"For this devil with her blue dress on ain't heard that for a while,
It was so fine, so very fine
Yeah the devil with the blue dress felt so fine"

Devil with the blue dress on, devil with the blue dress on

Thursday Ride

Words and Music by David Leinweber

Back in my hometown in mid-July
When the days were long and the grass was high
It seemed like every night was another lost rock and roll show
Sneaking away when the sun went down,
Having a time and painting the town
And "Down on Mainstreet" was playing on the radio

And now the big old wheels keep on rolling on down the highway
Monday morning gotta get on down the line
Well there's only one way I know and that's playing it my way
Well I'm taking everything in pretty good stride, got one more mile to go
For a Thursday ride

I remember that room at the top of the stair
Cracking that window in the evening air
We pull out a record and play it on the stereo
And we knew every line to Blood on the Tracks
Big Jim, Lily, Rosemary, and Jack,
And "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go"

Chorus

Looking back on all those times that I remember
All the things I've learned and the things I still don't know
What a drag it was when school would start back in September
With "Maggie May" still playing on the radio

Chorus

Rain Keeps Falling Down

Words and Music by David Leinweber

Early in the evening when the clouds are growing heavy and they're hanging low
Drifting soft and slow
And you look out of your window and you see the rain start falling and the waters flow
And it gives a magic glow
And you gaze out at the meadows as the rains fall down
Where the water shines like diamonds on the green, green ground
And I'm looking out my window while the rain keeps falling down
And I feel fine

And on the streets of this old city you can see the raindrops shining in the neon light
Shining in the night
And the colors on the windowpane just leave you with a feeling that the time is right
And I'm thinking that I might
Go down into the city by that old cafe
'cause there's something about the rain that takes your blues away
And I'm looking out the window while the rain keeps falling down
And I feel fine

Oh, Rain keeps Falling Down

Early in the morning when the city rises up and breathes the morning air
It's a feeling oh so rare
Because there's something about mornings in the streets of an old city when the rain's been there
And it's really kind of rare
When the rain's still on the sidewalk with the morning dew
And the people smile to greet you with the day anew
And I'm looking out the window while the rain keeps falling down
And I feel fine

I got a picture on my wall
Looks like 1672
And the rain's about to fall
Always makes me feel so blue

I got an image in my mind
Looks like 1674
I don't mean to sound unkind
But they're knocking on the door

I got a feeling in my head
Sounds like 1679
And when the lights turn blue and red
Always makes me feel so fine

"Funny and heartfelt. Old World Folk isn't a remembrance of classic songs. It's their full living revival."
